[Class 140.] In making floor &c. coverings to simulate tiles from rubber, linoleum, &c., tesserµ of partly cured linoleum, vulcanized rubber, &c. are positioned by a grid on a backing of plastic bonding material such as uncured linoleum or unvulcanized rubber, the grid is removed, and the tesserµ are forced into the bonding material so that the latter flows into and fills the spaces between adjoining tesserµ. One or more sheets of plastic rubber may be pressed on to a grid so as to fill the spaces, and vulcanized to form tesserµ, which may be forced on to a plastic rubber backing, either directly or through spaces in a second grid. Alternatively the already formed tesserµ 6 may be arranged by hand in the spaces of a grid 9 positioned in a frame 20 on a plastic backing 7, and pressed on to the backing by wooden blocks 23 mounted on a weight 22. The grid is retracted into the spaces between the wooden blocks by rocking levers 24 pivoted to the weight 22 so that their lower hooked ends engage lugs 26 on the grid 9, the weight is then removed, and the assembly of frame, backing, and tesserµ is moved on a conveyer 16 into a vulcanizing press. If it is desired to make long lengths of covering, each section is formed with overhanging edges by placing metal strips 21 in the frame 20, and vulcanized partially only, a strip of plastic rubber having an upstanding rib is placed between two edges to be joined, and the vulcanization completed.
