Abstract
Rubber-containing compositions for floor-coverings, road surfaces, &c. are made by adding finely-divided, non-colloidal fillers having substantially no water-absorbing properties, to wholly or partly vulcanized latex. Aqueous dispersions of bitumens may be incorporated with the latex before the fillers are added. The composition may be poured, sprayed, &c. directly on the surface, or may be made into sheets &c. and cemented to the base, e.g. by a rubber solution. According to an example, 100 parts of vulcanized latex containing 30 parts of rubber and 2 parts of sulphur, are mixed with 20 parts of a 50 per cent aqueous asphalt dispersion. 30 parts of asbestine, 20 parts ground limestone, and 3 parts of chromic oxide made into a paste with water are added, and the mixture is poured on to a base to form a layer 3 mm. thick. The base may be previously coated with an adhesive, such as a solution of rubber or casein. Other fillers specified are barytes, iron oxide, antimony pentasulphide.
