Abstract

A cement-rubber composition is made by mixing a concentrated latex or other dispersion of natural or synthetic rubber containing at least 60 per cent of rubber, and an hydraulic cement, the quantity of cement being at least 150 per cent by weight of the liquid content of the dispersion. The cement may be aluminous, Portland, slag or the like and is of ordinary commercial fineness. In the case of cements other than aluminous, a stabilizer, other than the ordinary preservative, must be included to prevent premature coagulation of the rubber. Fillers, vulcanizing agents, accelerators, antioxidizing agents, &c. may be added and also bituminous substances. The composition may be used in the making of roads, floors, &c., roofs, walls and frames of buildings, pipes, tanks, chemical apparatus such as baths and sinks, and moulded articles such as tiles, slabs and toys. In an example a road-making composition comprises 208 oz. of concentrated latex containing 152 oz. of rubber, 2 oz. of the stabilizer sold under the trade name Saprotin, 6,4 oz. of sulphur, 3,2 oz. of zinc oxide, 1,6 oz. of the accelerator sold under the trade name Vulcazit 576, 8 oz. of asbestos fibre, 8 oz. of carbon black and 118,4 oz. of alumina cement. Other examples are given. When making walls, tanks, pipes, &c. a skeleton of the structure may first be made of expanded metal or other meshing, the composition then being plastered on.
