Abstract

Linoleum-like materials are obtained by replacing the drying oils forming the base of the cement of conventional linoleum wholly or in part by rubber in a soft jelly-like elastic form. The rubber is preferably prepared by masticating on a Werner Pfleiderer mill with a softener such as a non-drying mineral oil and then zinc oxide added. This mix is then incorporated with wood rosin and fused copal, and tetramethyl thiuram disulphide or other so called sulphurless vulcanising accelerator added, a small proportion of sulphur may also be included. The gel so formed is compounded on an internal Banbury mixer with cork, woodflour, and whiting and after crumbling it is calendered onto a hessian backing and stored for several days.
