Abstract

A method of preparing an adhesive, e.g. for attaching rubber soles to fabric uppers, comprises the preparation of two compositions which are subsequently mixed, one of which comprises a natural or synthetic rubber such as polychloroprene or a copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile or styrene dissolved in an organic solvent, and the other of which comprises isobutylene dissolved in an organic solvent and at least one vulcanizing ingredient insoluble in the solvent. In examples (A)-(F), a mix consisting of zinc oxide, stearic acid, agerite white, sulphur, zinc isopropylxanthate, butyl 8, and polyisobutylene dispersed in petroleum spirit or trichlorethylene is used in conjunction with natural rubber dissolved in trichlorethylene, with butadiene-styrene copolymer dissolved in petroleum spirit or with butadiene - acrylonitrile dissolved in ethyl acetate. In examples (G) and (H), zinc oxide, catechol, salicylic acid and polyisobutylene are dispersed in trichlorethylene and used in conjunction with neoprene dissolved in toluene. The proportion of isobutylene is preferably so arranged that the viscosity of the mixture is not less than 200 centipoises in trichlorethylene and not less than 400 centipoises in petroleum spirit in order to counteract the tendency for insoluble matter to settle out.ALSO:A multi-part method of preparing a rubber adhesive comprises the preparation of two compositions which are subsequently mixed, one of which comprises a rubber dissolved in an organic solvent, and the other of which comprises isobutylene dissolved in an organic solvent and at least one vulcanizing ingredient for the rubber, which ingredient is substantially insoluble in the solvent last referred to. The rubber may be natural rubber or a vulcanizable synthetic rubber such as a polychloroprene, or a copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile or styrene. In examples (A)-(F), a mix consisting of zinc oxide, stearic acid, agerite white, sulphur, zinc isopropylxanthate, butyl 8, and polyisobutylene dispersed in petroleum spirit or trichlorethylene is used in conjunction with natural rubber dissolved in trichlorethylene, with butadiene-styrene copolymer dissolved in petroleum spirit or with butadiene-acrylonitrile dissolved in ethyl acetate. In examples (G) and (H) zinc oxide, catechol, salicylic acid and polyisobutylene were dispersed in trichlorethylene and this mix used in conjunction with neoprene dissolved in toluene.
