Abstract

Textile coating compositions comprise a liquid dispersion of natural rubber and from two to six volumes (preferably three to five) based on the rubber, of a hydrophilic diatomaceous earth. The term diatomaceous earth includes infusorial earth, diatomaceous silica and kieselguhr. The usual plasticizers, colouring agents, antioxidants, and accelerators may be present. The dispersion may be either an aqueous or an organic solvent (e.g. benzene, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, ethylene dichloride, chlorobenzene and naphthenic petroleum fractions) dispersion. In examples, (6) diatomaceous earth is incorporated in a composition containing natural rubber, zinc oxide, sulphur, mercaptobenzothiazole, diethylamine, carbon disulphide benzol and oil soluble pigments; and (7) a natural rubber latex containing also sulphur, zinc oxide dibetanaphthyl-p-phenylenediamine, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and casein is mixed with a methyl cellulose aqueous suspension of diatomaceous earth.ALSO:Textile coating compositions comprise a liquid dispersion of a natural or synthetic rubber and from two to six (preferably three to five) volumes, based on the rubber, of a hydrophilic diatomaceous earth, which term includes infusorial earth, diatomaceous silica and kieselguhr. Specified rubbers are polyisoprene, polybutadiene-1,3, poly-2-chlorobutadiene-1,3, natural rubber, the copolymers of 40 to 80 per cent conjugated hydrocarbondiene and 20 to 60 per cent of a polymerizable mono-olefinic compound, and butyl rubber. The usual plasticizers, colouring agents, antioxidants and accelerators may be present. The dispersion may be either aqueous or an organic solvent (e.g. benzene, toluene, methylethyl ketone, ethylene dichloride, chlorobenzene, and naphthenic petroleum fractions) one. In examples, compositions comprising diatomaceous earth and (1) and (2) compounded polychloroprene; (3) a compounded styrene-butadiene-1,3 copolymer; (4) a compounded acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer; (5) a styrene-butadiene copolymer latex; (6) a natural rubber cement and a benzyl solution; (7) a natural rubber latex; and (8) a compounded butyl rubber, are used to coat and/or laminate fabrics.
