Abstract

A composition for coating flexible base materials and other surfaces comprises 10-75 per cent of a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, 10-75 per cent of a halogen-2-butadiene-1,3 polymer and 10-50 per cent of a halogenated polythene, the proportions being based on the total weight of these film-forming ingredients. The specified halogen-butadiene is chloroprene and the polythene may be chlorinated or brominated. Other ingredients may be added and include alkali metal salts of higher fatty acids (release agents), zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, ground leather, petroleum oil, benzothiazole disulphide, sulphur and phenyl salicylate. The compositions are preferably mixed on a mill and calendered on to the base but dispersions or solutions in organic solvents may be prepared and knife-coated. After curing, during which the halogen-butadiene polymer is believed to react with either or both of the other polymers, the composition has improved abrasion resistance and flexibility at low temperatures and lack of tackiness at high temperatures. The compositions, in addition to their application to fabrics (see Group VIII), are useful in the manufacture of tyres, hose, floor covering and various sheet and moulded articles. A primer coating composition for increasing adherence of the above compositions to fabrics, comprises a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer, complex terpene resin, calcium carbonate, stearic acid, zinc oxide, non-heat-hardening phenolic resin, coumarone resin, benzothiazole disulphide and sulphur dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. Specifications 576,119, 627,376 and 654,689 are referred to.ALSO:A composition for coating flexible base materials and other surfaces comprises 10-75 per cent of a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, 10-75 per cent of a halogen-2-butadiene-1,3 polymer and 10-50 per cent of a halogenated polythene, the proportions being based on the total weight of these film-forming ingredients. The specified halogen-2-butadiene is chloroprene.
