Abstract

A waterproof coating composition for cloth comprises from 55 to 95% by weight of neoprene and from 5 to 45% by weight of another rubber, such as polybutadiene, Styrene butadiene rubber or natural rubber.

Description

WATERPROOF COATING COMPOSITION This invention relates to waterproof coating compositions and has particular but not exclusive relevance to waterproof fabrics.
Waterproof fabrics produced from a natural or synthetic cloth and a polymer layer are commonplace.
For example much military clothing, tent material and watersports clothing is of this kind.
It is common practice to print a cloth such as a woven nylon with the desired pattern such as, for example, the disruptive pattern style printed cloth as used by the military and subsequently to coat the printed fabric with a water resistant polymer layer.
With known fabric of this kind it has hitherto been common practice to coat the cloth with polyurethane. However, polyurethane has many undesirable qualities when used in this application.
The polyurethane coating is not particularly efficient at waterproofing the cloth; it makes a crackly noise when flexed which is particularly undesirable when the fabric is worn as clothing by army personnel in combat; the polyurethane coating is not particularly durable and lacks flexibility which often leads to the delamination of the polyurethane coating from the cloth. The fabric of this type is often coated with an exterior silicone layer to enhance waterproofing abilities of the polyurethane coating.
Fabric with an improved resistance to water has been manufactured by applying a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating rather than a polyurethane coating to the cloth. However, this second type of fabric also exhibits many undesirable properties such as poor abrasion resistance and poor low temperature flexibility. Also the PVC coating does not form strong bonds with all printed colours. This is because printing of a pattern on a cloth results in an excess of dyestuff on the surface of the cloth.
Disruptive pattern type military cloth has proven particularly difficult to successfully coat with PVC because of the differing strengths of adhesion between PVC and the various printed dyes of the disruptive pattern.
Polychloroprene coatings have also been applied to cloth in an attempt to improve the quality of the waterproof fabric. Polychloroprene forms strong bonds with a wide range of dyestuffs and has proven to be durable. The polychloroprene coating also exhibits good resistance to hydrophobic liquids such as oils.
However, polychloroprene exhibits poor low temperature flexibility. Additives such as adipates have previously been used in an attempt to improve the low temperature flexibility of the polychloroprene coating, but this adipate additive has disadvantages in that it exhibits poor resistance to solvents and has also not proven durable. It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a coating composition which overcomes the problems of the known compositions.
According to the invention there is provided a coating composition comprising from 55 to 95%/wt of polychloroprene and from 5 to 45%/wt of a rubber.
The preferred molecular weight range of the rubber of the invention is from 20,000 to 950,000.
Preferred rubbers are polybutadiene, Styrene butadiene rubber or natural rubber.
The preferred molecular weight range of the polychloroprene of the invention is from 20,000 to 950,000.
A particularly preferred type of polychloroprene is non-crystallising type.
This unique blend of polymers when used as a coating composition exhibits good low temperature flexibility, is durable, is resistant to the action of solvents, is efficient at waterproofing the fabric and does not make a noise when flexed. The coating composition of the invention forms a particularly strong bond with the printed dyes on the surface of the fabric. This coating composition has proven effective in the coating of disruptive pattern style fabric.
The coating composition of the invention may be applied to substantiaily any cloth whether synthetic or natural.
The method of application of the coating composition to the fabric comprises coating the cloth with the coating composition. The coatings are then cured. The waterproof fabric may then be treated to obtain the required finish.
The amount of coating composition applied to the cloth may be varied as required.
The following example further illustrates the invention.
EXAMPLE 1 A coating composition was made from the following ingredients: Parts by Weight Polychloroprene 80 Styrene Butadiene Rubber 20 Zinc oxide 4 pigment 1.5 processing acid 15 Antioxidant 1.5 Magnesium oxide 4.0 Accelerator/curative 0.7 EXAMPLE 2 Comparative tests were carried out to illustrate the improved qualities of the composition of the invention (c) with respect to the prior art compositions comprising polyurethane (a) or polyvinylchloride (PVC) (b).
All three types of coating were applied to the same 120 gsm plain woven nylon.
