Abstract
A rubber adhesive or cement comprises a mixture of vulcanized and unvulcanized latex or like dispersion in such proportions that the mixture when dry is adhesive but exhibits the characteristics of vulcanized rubber. The adhesive may be used in a single solution process, in which the parts to be joined, e.g. the sole and upper of a shoe, are coated with the adhesive, dried and pressed together, or in a double solution process, in which the parts, after being coated with the adhesive and dried, are treated with a rubber solvent or solution to revive the latex film. Sulphur, zinc oxide, and an accelerator, singly or in combination, may be added to the adhesive or to the solvent or solution or partly to one and partly to the other. In an example, an adhesive comprises 5 pints of vulcanized latex of 50 per cent rubber content and 3 pints of unvulcanized latex of 30 per cent rubber content. This may be modified, for a single solution process, by the addition of 2 oz. of sulphur, 3/4 oz. of accelerator and 1/2 oz. of zinc oxide. For a double solution process, a vulcanizing solution may be used comprising 8 pints of trichlorethylene, 1/2 oz. of accelerator and 3/4 oz. of sulphur. Other examples are given.
