Abstract

An adhesive cement is obtained by mixing and simultaneously heating at vulcanizing temperature, a mixture comprising a vulcanizable rubbery polymer, a tackifying resin compatible with said polymer in its non-vulcanized state, and a vulcanizing agent, and then dissolving the mixture in a volatile hydrocarbon solvent, the vulcanizing agent being present in excess of the amount normally required for vulcanization of said polymer to insolubility in said hydrocarbon solvent. Preferably a light-weight filler such as expanded vermiculite is added to produce a heat and sound insulating composition which may be applied with a spray gun. The polymer may be polybutadiene, neoprene, or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, isobutylene or acrylonitrile. The resin may be limed rosin, wood or gum rosin, zinc resinate, rosin esters, polymerized rosin, highly chlorinated paraffin resins, or coumarone-indene resins. The hydrocarbon solvent is preferably a petroleum oil, but may be an aromatic hydrocarbon. Ground cork, cotton linters, wood flour, zinc oxide and antioxidants, e.g. polymerized trimethyl-dihydroquinoline, may also be added.
