Abstract

Butyl rubber is vulcanized by heating with dimethylol phenol in the presence of from 1 to 10 parts of chlorosulphonated polythene per 100 parts rubber. The butyl rubber may be prepared from isobutylene or ethyl methyl ethylene and butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4- or 2,3-dimethyl butadiene or methyl butadiene. The preferred dimethylol phenols, which may be resinous or not, are 2-6-dimethylol-4-hydrocarbon-phenol, where the hydrocarbon is methyl, t-butyl, octyl, t-octyl, dodecyl, phenyl, benzyl, alpha,alpha-dimethyl benzyl and cyclohexyl. Preferred proportions of phenol are from 0.2 to 20 parts per 100 parts butyl. Preferred vulcanization temperatures are from 200-400 DEG F. for 5 minutes to 3 hours. Carbon black and such materials as stearic acid may be present in the rubber which may be used in making curing bags. U.S.A. Specification 2,296,800 is referred to.
