Abstract
A mixture of 60 to 100 parts of a conjugated diolefin and up to 40 parts of a vinyl aromatic compound is exposed to ionizing radiation of an intensity of 100,000 to 5,000,000 R/hr. for a duration, preferably 0.5 to 24 hours, sufficient to form a polymer suitable for use as a drying oil. The diolefin may be butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, piperylene, or methyl pentadiene, and the vinyl aromatic compound may be styrene or para-methyl-, dimethyl-, diethyl-, monochloro- or dichloro-styrene. The monomers may be diluted with a solvent such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, ethylene dibromide, isopropanol, benzene, pentane or hexane. Drying oils prepared by the above process or from butadiene and styrene by means of a sodium catalyst may be subjected to an ionising radiation of at least 10,000 R/hr. for a time sufficient to produce a desired viscosity increase which at 68-149 DEG F. may be similar to that obtained by heat-bodying while at 230 DEG to 345 DEG F. highly cross-linked resinous products may be produced.ALSO:A mixture of 60 to 100 parts of a conjugated diolefin and up to 40 parts of a vinyl aromatic compound is exposed to ionizing radiation of an intensity of 100,000 to 5,000,000 R/hr. for a duration, preferably 0.5 to 24 hours, sufficient to form a polymer suitable for use as a drying oil.
