Abstract
Sulphur-vulcanizable rubbery hydrocarbon polymerizates derived from conjugated dienes are vulcanized by heating in the presence of hexachlorocyclopentadiene, preferably in an amount of 1-200 per cent for a time sufficient to vulcanize the polymerizate. The polymerizates may be polybutadiene, butadienestyrene copolymers, and butadiene - para - methylstyrene copolymers. The product has marked flame resistance and is insoluble in benzene. Sulphur and metal oxide activators need not be added although zinc oxide, magnesia, or litharge in an amount of 0.5 to 20 per cent may be used to accelerate the reaction. Carbon black may also be added.ALSO:Sulphur-vulcanizable rubbery hydrocarbon polymerizates derived from conjugated dienes including natural rubber are vulcanized by heating in the presence of hexachlorocyclopentadiene, preferably in an amount of 1 to 200 per cent. for a time sufficient to vulcanize the polymerizate. The product has marked flame resistance and is insoluble in benzene. Sulphur and metal oxide activators need not be added although zinc oxide, magnesia or litharge in an amount of 0.5 to 20 per cent may be used to accelerate the reaction. Carbon black may also be added.
