Abstract

A vulcanisable composition consists principally of polymeric material made up of from 5 to 99% by weight of polymeric material (A), and correspondingly from 1 to 95% by weight of polymeric extender material (B), the group (A) material consisting of the natural and synthetic elastomeric materials containing carbon and carbon unsaturation and mixtures thereof, and group (B) material consisting of essentially amorphous polymer comprising from 35 to 95% by weight of polymerized propylene. The propylene may be polymerized with a -olefins other than propylene, conjugated dienes, non-conjugated dienes, acetylenes, the drying oils, and polymers of these, and natural rubber and mixtures of the foregoing. In preferred embodiments, polymeric extender material (B): (i) consists of a copolymer of propylene and ethylene containing from 5 to 65% by weight of ethylene or a copolymer of propylene and iso-butylene containing from 20 to 35% iso-butylene; (ii) contains from 2 to 50% by weight of butadiene, isoprene or divinylbenzene units or from 1 to 20% by weight of acetylene units; or (iii) may be derived from a mixture containing 2 to 45% by weight of a polybutene, a drying oil, such as tung, linseed or oiticia oils, or polybutadiene. Polymeric material (A) may be natural rubbers, polybutadiene, GR-S, GR-N, butyl rubber, halogenated butyl rubber and chlorobutadiene elastomers. The vulcanisable composition may contain an additional material (C) viz. carbon black or an organic or inorganic pigment, which may have been present during the formation of polymer material (B), in amounts of up to 50% of the combined weights of materials (B) plus (C); and a plasticizer for rubber (D) in similar proportions; preferably (C) and (D) each amount to between 5 and 25% of the combined weight of B, C and D. Examples disclose the properties of vulcanisable compositions and of such compositions after vulcanisation, which consist essentially of: (a) amorphous propylene-ethylene polymer or a mixture of polypropylene-isoprene and polypropylene-ethylene-polybutene with GR-S type cold rubber and including also natural rubber in some cases and (b) terpolymers of propylene and ethylene with methacrylonitrile, butadiene, tung oil or isoprene, and natural rubber, butadieneacrylonitrile, butyl rubber or polychloroprene.
