Abstract

524,063. Compound sheet-materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Jan. 20, 1939, No. 2089. Drawings to Specification. [Class 140] [Also in Groups IV and V] A spongy or cellular artificial material comprises polythene or modified polythene permeated with a large number of small uniformly distributed gas cells which may or may not be interconnected. By modified polythene is meant thermoplastic halogenated polythenes, thermoplastic halogenated polythenes from which halogen has been partly or wholly removed and mixtures of polythene with one or more of the following rubber-like materials viz., unvulcanized natural rubber such as crepe rubber, hydrogenated natural rubber, synthetic rubber made by the polymerization or super - polymerization of hydrocarbons such as butadiene containing conjugated double bonds, gutta percha, and those linear substantially saturated hydrocarbon polymers, e.g., polyisobutylene, which are similar in properties to raw or unvulcanized rubber. The material may be prepared by (a) melting the polythene in the presence of a gas under pressure, reducing the pressure and cooling the frothy melt, (b) introducing a gas, or vapour under pressure into a melt of the polythene. e.g., by the use of jets or by stirring and then cooling, (c) heating a mixture of the polythene with a substance adapted to give rise to gas or vapour on heating and cooling the resultant froth, or (d) heating a mixture of the polythene with a solid soluble substance under pressure to form a compact mass, cooling and dissolving out the soluble material. The material may be used in the form of sheets backed with flexible fabric, paper, metal foil or wire mesh to form shock or vibration absorbing cushions, polishing cloths or anti - skid pads. Specifications 471,590, 481,515, 492,322 and 514,687,. [all in Group IV], are referred to.
