Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce high-strength coke, by mixing powdery low-quality coal with solvent-refined coal, treating the mixture with heat below the softening point of the solvent-refined coal, kneading the mixture above the softening point to obtain reformed coal and blending the reformed coal with raw material coal to manufacture the coke.
CONSTITUTION: Low-quality coal such as weak caking coal or powdery caking coal is pulverized to a grain size of preferably about 4mm or less. Bituminous coal or brown coal is pulverized and then treated with a hydrocarbon solvent to obtain solvent-refined coal of preferably about 3mm or less in grain size. About 3W30wt% of the solvent-refined coal is added to the pulverized low-quality coal. The mixture is treated with heat below the softening point of the refined coal so that the mixture is dried. The mixture is then kneaded above the softening point so that the low- quality coal and the solvent-refined coal are dissolved and conjoined each other. Reformed coal is thus produced. About 20W45% of the reformed coal is blended with raw material coal. The blended coal is charged into a coke oven and changed into coke.
