Abstract

Acid sludge resulting from the treatment of a petroleum distillate with sulphuric acid is converted into an active carbon by distillation at 400-750 DEG F. whereby a black oily carbonaceous residue is obtained, which is thereafter heated at 1,000-1,500 DEG F. in an atmosphere of steam for further carbonization, and for activation. The distillation may be effected in a rotary kiln, a stationary kiln with internal rotating paddles, or a multiple hearth furnace, out of contact with air or combustion gases, for 1/2 to 3 hours, sulphur dioxide being evolved. The second stage may be carried out in a multiple hearth furnace. The carbonised product, which may be ground, is then heated to between 1600 DEG and 1800 DEG F. for 1/2 to 1 hour in an atmosphere of steam, while being agitated, to complete activation. In both heating stages, steam is preferably supplied superheated at a pressure below 5 pounds/sq. in. gauge, and in amounts between 1 and 5 pounds per pound of carbonised material per hour. The activated product is then cooled in an atmosphere of steam to below 500 DEG F.
