Abstract
Finely divided coal is heated in the presence of hydrogen (e.g. at 750-950 DEG k) and up to 150 bar and the volatile products, without cooling or condensing, are then subjected to cracking at a temperature above the carbonization temperature (e.g. at 950-1180 DEG k), in the absence of catalyst, and in the presence of hydrogen. The products of the process are a mixture comprising benzene, methane and ethane and a reactive char which can be gasified.
