Abstract

Coke is provided by (a) polymerising aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures contg. unsaturated compds. at 300-400 degrees C under a briefly applied pressure, (b) immediately subjecting the product to evaporation by relaxing the pressure, (c) fractionally distilling the product to separate the polymers, together with the base product, from fractions boiling below ca 350 degrees C, and (d) carbonising the base product optionally mixed with products having a b.p. above 220 degrees C, in a coking retort at 450-550 degrees C and a relative pressure of 6.5 atm. The coke is anisotropic and can be easily converted into graphite, esp. for prodn. of graphite electrodes.
