Abstract
1340099 Carbon fibres CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE 17 May 1971 [19 May 1970] 15193/71 Heading C1A Carbon fibres are prepared from pitch or similar strongly aromatic distillation residue by subjecting the residue to a heat treatment at a temperature not more than 420‹ C. in the presence of a polymerized hydrocarbon material, the product of the heat treatment is then spun into fibres which are then oxidized and carbonized. The polymeric material may be added before or during the heating step. The polymeric hydrocarbon added may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polybicyclo[2,2,1]- heptene 2, or natural or synthetic rubber. The heat treatment is preferably stopped before or more particularly just as an optically anisotropic phase begins to form in the mixture. The preferred distillation residue is coal-tar pitch.
