Abstract

1,222,331. Process for carbazolizing anthrimides. VYKUMNY USTAV ORGANICKYCH SYNTEZ. 1 Jan., 1969 [2 Jan., 1968], No. 5/69. Heading C4P. Diphthaloylcarbazole vat dyestuffs are prepared by continuously introducing into a reaction zone an anthrimide, a titanium tetrahalide and a solvent, either in the form of a mixture or separately, but simultaneously to form a mixture in the reaction zone, effecting carbazolization by heating the mixture to a temperature and for a period of time sufficient to effect initiation of a Friedel Craft reaction on the anthrimide, and continuously removing the product from the reaction zone. The amount of titanium tetrahalide is 1À5 to 2À5 mol. per mol. of anthrimide. The reaction preferably takes place at 50-200‹ C. for 5-60 minutes. The solvents used include hydrocarbons of the benzene and naphthalene series, their halogenated derivatives and higher boiling aliphatic halogenated hydrocarbons. The reaction mixture may be homogenized.
