Abstract

Aliphatic hydrocarbons, with two methyl substituents attached to the same carbon atom, and more highly branched hydrocarbons are separated from aliphatic hydrocarbons with two methyl grps. attached to different hydrocarbons and less highly branched hydrocarbons, by selective absorption of the lower branched material onto an organic molecular sieve consisting of a pyrolised polyvinylidene chloride polymer with a pore width of 4.4-5.0 angstroms. The process is esp. useful for raising the octane number of petroleum feeds.
