Abstract

Petroleum residium is converted into high quality coke by heating and coking the residuum under conditions of delayed time, temperature and pressure, fractionating the distillate products so formed to give a heavy gas oil 80% of which boils above 700 F., and coking the gas oil as above but in a subsequent and separate coking process at 900-950 C. the petroleum residuum, which may be topped or vacuum reduced as phaltenic or naphthenic crude oil, enters at 21 at a temperature of #600 F. where it may be fractionated in tower 10 or passed directly to furnace 12 and thence to the twinned coking drums 13, 13a, yielding coke and a distillate. The distillate passes to stripping tower 14 where the 700 F. heavy gas oil fraction is removed and stored in tank 20, from where it is fed to the coking sections 12, 13a, 13, valve 31 being closed in a separate operation to give premium grade coke. Fractionating tower 10 can be used to remove the heavy 700 F. gas oil fraction from the distillate, and stripping tower 14 is bypassed. The furnace 12 temperature is preferably 725 to 945 F. The coke is removed hydraulically from drums 13, 13a, calcined, ground and sized.
