Abstract

Resinous products are obtained from heavy hydrocarbons of an unsaturated nature, e.g. cracked residua and tars, by spraying or dripping the residua on to the surface of molten materials, e.g. molten lead heated to 400 DEG -500 DEG C. and removing the vaporized and liquid products immediately from the reaction zone before coking occurs. The liquid products are worked up by extraction with petroleum ether, the insoluble portion being dried to give a resin while the solution after evaporation of the ether is further extracted with furfural, further resins being obtained from the extract and residue. In examples the distillate is extracted with petroleum ether and then furfural to yield resins (a) soluble in petroleum ether, (b) insoluble in ether but soluble in furfural, (c) insoluble in furfural as well as a petroleum jelly, lubricating oil and oil boiling below 300 DEG C.
