Abstract

Resinous products are obtained by subjecting the liquid distillates produced by the processes described in Specifications 566,281, 566,282, [both in Group III], 567,420 and 573,240 to a further heat treatment within the temperature range of 400-500 DEG C., the resulting products being subjected to fractionation and/or solvent extraction to isolate different resins and hydrocarbon fractions. In examples: (1) a heavy distillate of boiling range 200-395 DEG C. obtained by the conversion of cracked residue by dripping the latter on to coke lumps heated to 440 DEG C., was treated with furfural to separate (a) paraffinic and (b) non-paraffinic constituents. The paraffinic portion (a) was distilled to leave a petroleum jelly which was then heated for 4 hours on a molten metal bath at 400-480 DEG C. The distillate obtained was treated with furfural and on distilling off the furfural, a resin having a m.p. of 45 DEG C. was obtained. The non-paraffinic portion (b) was also distilled to give gas oil and lubricating fractions and leave a resinous residue which was treated with petrol ether to separate two resins, (1) a resin insoluble in petrol ether but soluble in toluene, and (2) a resin soluble in the ether.
