Abstract
<PICT:0610017/III/1> In processes for the cracking and/or hydrogenation of mineral and tar oils of the kind in which vaporisation of the crude is effected by heat derived from undistilled residua circulated continuously under pressure through a pipe coil 11 and a tower 7 to which the crude is fed through a preheater and heat exchanger 5, the cracked vapours are removed without intermediate condensation through line 14 to a fractionation column 15 from which benzol is recovered overhead through line 16 and condenser 22 to storage tank 24, while separate naphtha, phenol, creosote, and anthracene fractions are recovered through lines 17, 18, 19, 20, to sight boxes 32-35 from which they are recirculated for recracking: (a) through line 36 to the column 7; (b) through line 42 to mix with the crude (c) through lines 42, 43 to the coil 11. Fractions not recirculated pass to storage tanks 30 through coolers 27. A catalyst may be circulated with the liquids flowing through the coil 11 or arranged in trays in the column 7. Hydrogenation may be effected by passing hydrogenating gases through the coil 11 or column 7. The water used to cool condenser 22 is then passed through condenser 28. The temperature of the residue in the coil 11 may range from 300-900 DEG C. Quenching of the cracked products may be effected by injection of water, process products &c. into the column 7.
