Abstract
501,280. Hydrogenating cracked tars &c. WILTON, T. O. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23003. [Class 32] In the process for distilling and/or cracking tars, hydrocarbons, glycerides, of the kind described in Specification 472,541 in which the crude materials are freed from volatile constituents by mixing them with hot.residues which have passed' through the cycle, the vapours formed by the distillation and.cracking are hydrogenated in a mixer column 8 comprising a vapour box 9 divided by a plate 10 from column 7 into which hydrogenating gases are introduced through perforated pipes 48, 49 and which is provided with trays 27 carrying catalysts, e.g. nickel, bauxite. The pipes 48, 49 may also be used for the introduction of steam. The hydrogenated vapours are fractionated in a tower 4 and the uncondensed fractions are passed through an exchanger 3 in heat exchange with part of the crude materials fed from tank 1, and finally through a cooler 37 to a separator 38 and tank 39. The.other part of the crude is distilled and/or cracked in the coil 21 and passed into the mixer box 9, from which a portion is removed through line 29 and injected with the preheated crude flowing in line 6 through lines 11, 30 into the column 7. Residues from the bottom of the tower 8 are recirculated to the coil 21. The hydrogenating gases may comprise watergas and mixtures of hydrogen with other gases, e.g. carbon monoxide. The column 8 may be operated at pressures of from 400 lb. to 3000 lb. per sq. inch and at temperatures up to 500‹ C.
