Abstract

A process for preparing a bitumen having a penetration index below - 1 comprises thermo-cracking a hydrocarbon oil distilate having a final B.P. below 250 DEG C. at a temperature above 600 DEG C., ad subjecting the cracking products with an initial B.P. above the final B.P. of the feed to a heat treatment between 100 DEG and 310 DEG C. to remove volatiles and leave the desired bitumen as residue. Feeds mentioned include gasoline fractions, kerosene fractions, and gas oil fractions, and steam cracking or salt-bath cracking may be employed. The heat-treatment may be distillation at normal or reduced pressure, e.g. under total reflux for from 1/2 to 5 hours, or may be performed under pressure for a similar time, the volatiles being subsequently distilled off.
