Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by heating an aqueous solution of a -a -g -g -tetramethylbutylphenol containing at least an equivalent amount of an alkali metal hydroxide with formaldehyde, acidifying the condensate in the presence of a water-soluble oxalate or oxalic acid and a volatile, inert, water immiscible organic solvent for the resin, separating the resin, freeing it from acid and heating the product at a dehydrating temperature to eliminate the solvent. 4 : 4<1> - dihydroxy - diphenyldimethylmethane may also be added to the condensation to yield products with siccative properties. The products are soluble in aliphatic, aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons and in animal or vegetable oils and fats. In examples: (1) a -a -g -g -tetramethylbutylphenol is dissolved in aqueous caustic soda containing oxalic acid, heated with formaldehyde, the product acidified with sulphuric acid in the presence of ethylene dichloride benzene or toluene, the solution of resin removed and the resin recovered from solution and heated to yield a product soluble in benzene, petroleum naphtha, ligroin or linseed oil; (2) a mixture of a -a -g -g -tetramethylbutylphenol and p - p<1> - dihydroxydiphenyldimethylmethane is condensed with formaldehyde in a manner similar to that adopted in example 1. Specification 409,111 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers in general to the condensation of a -a -g -g -tetramethylbutylphenol with formaldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
