Abstract

The primary or secondary coolant of a nuclear reactor comprises an aromatic concentrate or a fraction thereof obtained from a cycle oil having an initial boiling-point of at least 250 DEG C. and which is obtained from the cracking of hydrocarbon oils. The cycle oil may be obtained by a thermal cracking process but is preferably obtained from a catalytic process. The aromatic concentrate may be obtained by extraction, extractive distillation, selective adsorption or selective absorption, but is preferably obtained by treating the cracked cycle oil with one or more selective solvents such as liquid sulphur dioxide, furfural, benzene, nitrobenzene or phenol, and the solvent may be removed by distillation. The whole of the aromatic concentrate may be used, or the concentrate may be distilled and the fraction boiling between 290 DEG and 330 DEG C. used. The concentrate may be treated to reduce the sulphur content; a treatment with sodium reduces the sulphur content from 3 to 0.3%.
