Abstract

Pure benzene is recovered from coking plant benzene by subjecting a benzene distillate fraction, from which no constituents boiling below benzene have been separated, to an extractive distillation with a selective solvent for aromatics, removing non-aromatics including carbon disulphide as overhead, recovering benzene from the solvent in the bottoms and subjecting the benzene to acid washing. The acid washed product may be distilled again. Specified solvents are aniline, phenol, N-methylpyrrolidone, sulpholane, diethyleneglycol or butyrolactone.
