Abstract

Carotene is extracted from oils and derivatives thereof (e.g fatty acids) by contacting them with finely-divided activated carbon which has been freed of oxygen and eluting the carotene from the carbon. The oil is preferably de-aerated prior to treatment and may be warmed or diluted with a solvent (petroleum ether, acetone or ether) to reduce its viscosity. The eluting solvent is preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene, and this may be used a number of times until a sufficient concentration of carotene is obtained. Pure carotene may be obtained from the concentrate. The absorption and elution may take place on a column, in batches or continuously as in Specification 691,355. Examples show the extraction of carotene from Bissao palm oil and red palm oil. Carrot oil may also be used.ALSO:Carbon for the chromatographic treatment of carotene-containing oils is freed of oxygen by (1) treatment at a normal or slightly elevated temperature with a reducing agent, or (2) heating to 350 DEG C or above in an oxygen-free gas such as hydrogen, nitrogen, steam or carbon monoxide or dioxide. Suitable reducing agents are hydroquinone, formic acid and sodium sulphite, dissolved in benzene, ether, alcohol or water. After such treatment, the reducing agent is removed by washing with benzene, and the latter expelled by a fat solvent such as petroleum ether, acetone or ether. Examples are given.
