Abstract

Cymol or a derivative is treated simultaneously with oxidizing and water-removing substances to yield a hydrocarbon of composition C20H24. Suitable reagents include nitrous gases in the presence of sulphuric acid or sulphurous acid and nitrosylsulphuric acid. In examples (1) cymol is dissolved in sulphuric acid and treated with nitrous fumes or nitric acid to yield the hydrocarbon, its sulphonic acid or its nitro derivative; 4) p-tolyldimethylcarbinol, an oxidation derivative of cymol, is treated with sulphuric acid to yield the hydrocarbon.
