Abstract

283,781. Ruzicka, C. May 27, 1927. Acetic anhydride is produced by the action of sulphur trioxide on ordinary or glacial acetic acid. The sulphur trioxide is passed into the acid either by vaporizing the trioxide or by using the gases containing the trioxide produced by the catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide. The acid may be agitated and cooled during the process, and may be wholly or partially converted into anhydride. In the latter case the mixture may be used directly for the acetylation of cotton or wood cellulose.
