Abstract
Humous substances of an acid character stated to be of use in tanning are obtained by the action of nitrogen oxides on solid coaly substances, preferably in presence of water or steam; the reaction may be effected in presence of a catalyst, such as ferrous sulphate. In an example, finely powdered moist brown coal made into a paste with a solution of ferrous sulphate is heated under reflux first to 70 DEG C. and then to 90 DEG C. and treated, while stirring, with a mixture of nitric oxide and air. The reaction is allowed to proceed until a test portion of the product is soluble or nearly soluble in alkali, and the product is then filtered and washed.
