Abstract
The metal content of petroleum fractions boiling above 250 DEG C is reduced by contacting a feedstock with active Raney nickel, iron, or cobalt. The contaminants may be present as porphyrins, e.g. vanadyl or nickel porphyrines. The contacting may be carried out at 0 DEG to 250 DEG C., and preferably at atmospheric pressure. The ratio of Raney metal to petroleum is preferably 1:1 to 100:1 and the contact time is preferably 10 minutes to 100 hours. The petroleum fraction may be dissolved in a lower boiling hydrocarbon solvent, for example benzene. The Raney metal may be freed of the contaminants by means of solvents, e.g. petroleum hydrocarbons boiling below 250 DEG C., phenol, furfural, pyridine or butyrolactone, or by contacting with a saturated or unsaturated sulphur-containing organic compound or an alkyl hydroperoxide. The sulphur and nitrogen content of the petroleum feedstocks is also reduced by the above process.
