Abstract

Nitrogenous compounds are removed from hydrocarbon oils by treating with phosphoric acid in the liquid phase, separating the oil from spent phosphoric acid, mixing water and a volatile water-immiscible organic solvent, and, if required to ensure phase separation, a volatile water-miscible organic solvent with the spent acid; separating the aqueous phase and distilling to remove any water-miscible solvent present and such a quantity of water as to leave as residue a phosphoric acid of sufficient strength for rinse. The phosphoric acid may have a concentration of 80-95 per cent H3PO4. Water-immiscible solvents referred to are volatile hydrocarbons, such as gasoline, petroleum spirits, naphtha, benzene, xylene, toluene, hexane, heptane, octane, cyclohexane and methyl cyclohexane; chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, dibutyl ether, dimethyl carbonate and tri- or tetra-chloroethene. Water-miscible solvents specified are ketones, alcohols, ethers or esters, e.g. methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-propyl and tertiary-butyl alcohols, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl acetate and formate, methylal, dioxane and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The ratio of oil to phosphoric acid may be 100:1 to 1:1. The oil may be separated from the spent acid by centrifuging or settling, and may then be washed with water or alkali, e.g. dilute caustic soda, or treated with adsorbent clays, with or without a solid alkaline material such as lime. Sufficient water may be added to the spent acid to dilute it to 25-60 per cent H3PO4. The water-immiscible phase may be treated to recover the solvent and the extracted nitrogenous compounds. Mineral lubricating oils, gas oils, diesel fuels, jet fuels, gasolines and fuel oils may be treated.
