Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils are freed from mercaptans by contact with a catalyst containing a complex or co-ordinate copper compound supported on active carbon, which may additionally contain phosphates. In an example, a straight-run kerosine having B.pt. 160-230 DEG C., 0.05-0.2% S and 10-200 p.p.m. mercaptan was treated with a range of catalysts for comparison purposes after which the most effective catalysts reduced the mercaptans content to < 3 p.p.m. Prior to the sweetening, if hydrogen sulphide or other acidic components such as phenols or thiophenols are present they may be removed by means of a caustic wash. Metallic contaminants such as iron or zinc may be removed by an acid wash. Specification 944,054 is referred to.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises at least one complex copper compound supported on active carbon. Complex copper compound is defined as one in which Cu is bonded to other elements by co-ordinate bond(s). Preferably the catalyst contains an organo-copper complex, i.e. a compound containing an organic molecule bonded to Cu by co-ordinate bond(s). Such complexes may contain the configurations: -OH, =O, -NH2, -NH-, <FORM:0996500/B1-B2/1> and <FORM:0996500/B1-B2/2> Additionally the catalyst may contain P2O5. Specification 944,054 is referred to.
