Abstract
Vaporizable unreacted monomers are recovered from the liquid reaction mixture resulting from a polymerization reaction involving at least two alpha-olefins and at least one C6- 22 non-conjugated diene by contacting the reaction mixture with a vaporized solvent for the monomers under conditions such that at least part of the solvent is condensed, the condensation thereof providing energy for vaporization of the monomers which are then removed together with any uncondensed solvent vapour. The reaction mixture may first have been subjected to flashing. The solvent is preferably of higher boiling point than any of the monomers present, and if a solvent has been used in the polymerization reaction the same solvent is used in the recovery. The process is preferably carried out under anhydrous conditions, and more than one contacting zone may be employed, the liquid effluent from each zone being further treated in the next zone. The recovered monomer/solvent mixture may be returned to the polymerization zone. The example is of recovering ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene using n-hexane vapour.
