Abstract
A process for the synthesis of polymeric products from ethylene, propylene or other alpha-olefins or mixtures thereof comprises polymerizing the alpha-olefin with a catalyst comprising titanium, zirconium, vanadium or aluminium or mixtures thereof in the presence of a diluent comprising propane, propylene or butane or a mixture thereof, removing said diluent from the resulting solid polymeric product, removing the catalyst residues from the solid product by de-ashing the product with a hydroxyl-containing reactant to react with and solubilize the residues in admixture with an aliphatic hydrocarbon having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms per molecule, and in the presence of an inorganic acid, the de-ashing being effected at temperatures within the range of from 190 to 250 DEG F., and then separating the thus purified polymer product from the resultant reactant containing the solubilized residues. In the examples polyethylene and polypropylene, produced by polymerizing the monomers in butane using a titanium trichloride/aluminium triethyl catalyst, are de-ashed by treatment with an isopropanol/heptane/anhydrous hydrochloric acid mixture at various temperatures within the range specified above. The de-ashed polymers may be for electrical insulators. The atactic content of polypropylene is also reduced in the de-ashing process.
