Abstract

Olefins are polymerized with a Ziegler catalyst and at not less than 105 DEG C. in an inert solvent in which the polymer is soluble at the polymerization temperature, whereby the liquid phase containing polymer in solution may be withdrawn-optionally an alkaline-earth metal hydroxide (e.g. Ca(OH)2) added-filtered to remove solid catalyst material, and then separated (e.g. by precipitation, crystallization or cooling) into a polymer and a liquid, which may be recycled if desired. The olefin may be ethylene and/or propylene and may contain specified small amounts of impurities such as acetylene, air and water vapour. Catalysts may be those disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031, and suitable solvents are hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, e.g. a high boiling range aliphatic hydrocarbon fraction, white spirit or kerosene. The polymerization may be batchwise or continuous or with intermittent addition or removal of components. An advantage of the process is the removal of waxy polymer which remains in solution in the solvent used. In Example I the polymer obtained is also steam stripped and dried.
