Abstract

Olefins of formula CH2=CHR wherein R is alkyl are polymerized using a catalyst obtained by contacting a crystalline, hydrocarbon-insoluble metal halide of a Group IVa, Va, or VIa metal with an alkyl or dialkyl halide of a Group II or III metal, at a temperature of 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. and in solution in a paraffinic hydrocarbon which is liquid at the temperature and pressure employed but which has an atmospheric boiling point of from-42 DEG C. to +0,6 DEG C., e.g. propane, n-butane or isobutane. In examples propylene is polymerized using TiCl3 + E + 2AlCl and linear, crystalline polymers are obtained. A suitable apparatus is described. Advantages specified are the finely-divided state of the polymers obtained, and the fact that the solvent used may easily be recovered (for recycling) from any methyl alcohol used during purification, by reduction of the reaction mixture to atmospheric pressure. Specification 810,023 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 823,932.
