Abstract

A process for the alkylation of phenol comprises reacting phenol with an olefine which is an aliphatic hydrocarbon which contains one or more double bonds or hydrocarbon substitution product thereof or a mixture of such olefines at a temperature between 325 DEG and 425 DEG C. in the absence of an added alkylation catalyst. The olefine starting material should not contain double bonds only in ring structures. Addition products of phenol with polymers of the alkene, especially with dimerized alkene are produced in addition to the addition product of phenol with monomeric alkene. Alkenes mentioned are those containing 7 to 22 carbon atoms, especially 14 to 18 carbon atoms, in their molecules. In examples: monocetyl phenol, monocetyl-dimer-phenol and cetene polymers are obtained by heating phenol and cetene-1 in pressure vessels (1); in a similar process a mixture of alkenes containing 14-18 carbon atoms obtained by cracking paraffin wax are employed (2); in similar processes alkenes or alkene mixtures having 7,7-10, 8, 10-12, 16-20 and 20-22 carbon atoms in the molecule are employed (3) and in a similar process to (1) a mixture of C15-C18 alkenes is employed at various temperatures and in a nitrogen atmosphere (4). The process may be carried out continuously in a tube or one or more agitated reactors, the latter being preferably connected in series. The continuous process is preferably carried out with a single-phase reaction mixture.
