Abstract

Olefines are polymerised using a Ziegler type catalyst in an organic liquid diluent and characterized in that agitation is effected and reaction heat is abstracted by the continuous circulation of excess olefine whereby liquid diluent is evaporated at a temperature below its boiling point. The amount of cooling may be adjusted by controlling the amount of diluent vapour in the recycled olefine and/or by the use of an inert gas in the olefine stream. Condensed diluent is also recycled. Olefines specified are ethylene, propylene and butylene and in examples the catalyst components used are Ti Cl4 and Al Et3 or Et2 Al Cl. The reactions are carried out at 70 DEG C and 40 DEG C in cyclohexane as organic liquid diluent. A suitable apparatus is described.
