Abstract
A polymerization catalyst is made by reacting a lamellar complex comprising an alkali metal and carbon, with an organic activator under conditions such that an alkali metal alkyl is formed, and mixing the reaction product formed, or a part thereof comprising the alkyl, with a halide other than a fluoride of a metal of Group IV(A), V(A), or VI(A), of the Mendel<\>eeff Periodic Table. The activator may be an alkyl or aryl chloride, bromide or iodide, or a hydrocarbon such as acetylene, butadiene, isoprene, propylene, isobutene, or 2-methylpentene-2. The catalyst is used to polymerize feedstocks of ethylene, propylene, butenes and mixtures thereof. The feedstocks are treated to remove allene and/or methyl-acetylene, and also they are essentially free from water. The feedstocks may contain saturated hydrocarbons and also hydrogen. The catalyst may be employed as a fixed bed, a fluidised bed, or a slurry in a solvent. The reaction may be effected batchwise or continuously. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques.
