Abstract

Olefins are polymerized in the presence of an hydrocarbon diluent and a catalyst comprising chromium oxide associated with at least one oxide selected from silica, alumina, zirconia and thoria, at least a portion of the chromium being in the hexavalent state, by maintaining an olefin-containing gaseous phase in contact with the olefin-diluent mixture, and introducing monomeric olefin at a rate at least as great as that at which monomeric olefins are polymerized. The olefin-diluent mixture is preferably stirred and the temperature of the process kept within the range 150-450 DEG F. Specified olefins are butadiene, isoprene, butadiene-1-olefin mixtures, ethylene, propylene and ethylene-propylene mixtures. It is preferred that the process is carried out continuously although batch operation can be used. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
