Abstract

A continuous flow, solution polymerization process comprises accelerating a diluent and/or monomer through a suction or eduction zone wherein a pressure differential is created thus admixing monomer, diluent and catalyst, which is preferably drawn into said zone as a slurry in a hydrocarbon diluent. The description discloses the polymerization of ethylene, propylene, butene, pentene, butadiene or mixtures thereof using hydrocarbon diluents, e.g. cyclohexane, and chromium oxide catalyst supported on silica, alumina, zirconia and/or thoria. Apparatus is described wherein the flow of reactants and catalyst may be concurrent or countercurrent and wherein the aspiration zones are constricted conduits such as Venturi tubes or orifice plates. Polymerization may be in two stages, and recycling of reaction components may be effected. The polymer associated with the subsequently settled catalyst is of different molecular weight to that which remains in solution, whereby a fractionation of product may be effected.
