Abstract
A low-pressure process for polymerising an olefinic hydrocarbon is carried out in a liquid medium and reaction mixture is withdrawn from the polymerisation reactor during polymerisation, a minor portion of the withdrawn mixture is removed for working-up the polymer product and a major proportion of the withdrawn mixture returned to the reactor the major portion being separated into a concentrated slurry fraction which is returned to the reactor and a solvent fraction which is cooled before being returned to the reactor. In a modification the reaction mixture is separated into a solvent fraction and a concentrated slurry fraction, the solvent fraction being returned to the polymerisation zone after cooling and the concentrated slurry being divided into a minor portion which is removed for working-up and a major proportion which is returned to the reactor. The concentrated slurry may be returned to the reactor as a separate stream, the reaction mixture may be continuously withdrawn from the reactor during polymerisation, the solvent fraction may be mixed with fresh solvent either before or after cooling which may take place in a heat exchanger, the withdrawn mixture may pass through a time tank before separation the tank preferably having an agitator and vent for removing gaseous material. The withdrawn reaction mixture may be separated in a continuous centrifuge or a hydro-cyclone and the concentrated slurry returned to the reactor by means of a screwconveyer. The usual Ziegler catalysts may be used in the polymerisation while ethylene is the specified olefin. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
