1457065 Photochemical process SOC NATIONALE DES PETROLES D'AQUITAINE 4 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 43187/74 Heading C2C A photochemical process for preparing a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon from an olefin and a halogen source by an addition reaction, a sulphohalide substituted hydrocarbon from a hydrocarbon, SO 2 and a halogen and a mercaptan from an olefin and H 2 S by an addition reaction is effected by passing all the reagents through an irradiated reactor in gaseous form, in contact with a dispersed liquid phase comprising at least one inert liquid substantially incapable of dissolving the reagents, the liquid phase being fed in at the top of the reactor in the form of a shower of droplets and passed through the reactor so that it reaches the whole of the section of the reactor which is in contact with the gaseous mixture, the liquid passed through being treated to separate out the products of the reaction. The liquid phase preferably does not dissolve the reaction product and after removal of the reaction product is passed through a heat exchanger and recycled to the reactor. In the example a mixture of methane, SO 2 and Cl 2 is reacted in a liquid phase consisting of sulphuric acid solution.
