Abstract
Olefins are purified by mixing with silica heated to at least 100 DEG C. and separating the olefins from the slurry formed. The olefin may be a straight chain, preferably alpha, olefin or mixture of olefins obtained by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, dehydrating alcohols, polymerising propylene or butylene, or the thermal or catalytic cracking of petroleum oils or waxes and may have been urea extracted. The process is particularly suitable for purifying normally liquid, C5-C18 olefins; higher olefins are liquefied by heating and lower olefins by pressurising. The silica is preferably activated silica gel having an average B.S.S. mesh size between 70 and 150, a silica content of at least 98% and a surface area of at least 500 m.2/g. The silica and olefin are agitated together for 10-45 minutes, e.g. with a Vibro-mixer, the temperature not being allowed to drop below 30 DEG C. The olefin is separated by distillation, centrifuging or filtration and is suitable for Ziegler polymerisation or preparing alkyl benzene sulphonate detergents. Specifications 657,496, 671,456, 671,457, 671,458, 681,246 and 725,598 are referred to.
